We started out 2006 with the flood. Being on the valley floor was difficult for us personally; but, our dormant vines came through in great shape. Bud break was a bit delayed by the cool, wet spring; but, soon the weather turned back to the usual hot days and cool nights and our vines were off and running. A mid-July heat wave allowed the vines to catch up on their development, with cooler weather returning in August. Some light rain late in the season was followed by an Indian summer, which allowed us to give optimal hang time to the fruit. We harvested 6 tons per acre in 2006.
Deep purple in the glass, this is a big and elegant wine. On the nose you’ll find a bouquet of berries with faint hints of licorice and eucalyptus. The initial taste is smooth and full, ultimately revealing blackberry, cherry, and a hint of pepper. The structure is built for aging, with refined tannins and well balanced acidity.
The 2006 Syrah is a great food wine and can be paired with a wide variety of foods, from lighter dishes like pastas and fish, to heartier entrees like lasagna and grilled lamb chops.
The wine is unfined. Wonderful now, it will continue to benefit from aging for another 5-10 years.$24 PER BOTTLE
